Dal 1948 ad oggi, tutto quello che c'è da sapere sul Costume Institute Gala.

Il primo Met Gala risale al 1948, quando Eleanor Lambert, socialite, giornalista di moda e pioniera delle pubbliche relazioni - contribuì a fondare anche la New York Fashion Week, il Council of Fashion Designers of America, e l'International Best Dressed List -, organizzò l'evento per promuovere la moda americana e raccogliere fondi per il Costume Institute del Metropolitan Museum of Art a New York, rimanendo la principale fonte di finanziamento del dipartimento ancora oggi. Solo due anni prima la collezione del Museum of Costume Art (che comprendeva abiti e accessori dal XV secolo agli anni '40) confluì nel Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Tuttavia, il Met Gala come lo conosciamo oggi prende forma negli anni '70, sotto la direzione di Diana Vreeland, editor di Harpers Bazaar US e redattrice capo di Vogue Magazine dal 1962 al 1972, allora consulente speciale del Costume Institute. La sua visione audace e innovativa ha trasformato il Met Gala in un evento iconico, aprendolo a figure del mondo dell'arte e della cultura pop.

Qual è la data del Met Gala?

Il Met Gala viene celebrato il primo lunedì di maggio sin dal 1948 (non si è tenuto solamente nel 2000, nel 2002 e nel 2020) e ha trovato la sua sede attuale, il Metropolitan Museum, solo a partire dagli anni '70.

Quanto costano i biglietti per il Met Gala?

Per il primo Met Gala organizzato da Eleanor Lambert nel 1948 il prezzo del biglietto d'ingresso era di 50 dollari, equivalenti all'incirca a 650 dollari attuali. Nulla al confronto dei costi attuali. Nel 2023 un biglietto singolo si attestava a 50.000 dollari, mentre per un tavolo si è raggiunta la cifra di 300.000 dollari. Tuttavia nel caso del Met Gala non vale il detto "pecunia non olet". Non è sufficiente avere i soldi per acquistare i biglietti, la selezione degli invitati (persino dei posti a sedere ai tavoli durante la cena di gala) viene fatta dal capo del comitato per l'organizzazione dell'evento, ruolo rivestito dal 1995 dalla caporedattrice di Vogue Magazine Anna Wintour.
